CAN League Flag Football

Interested in playing co-ed flag football for a William and Mary alumni team this Fall and Winter? October is just around the corner and that means another Capital Alumni Network (CAN) flag football season is about to begin!

Once again, W & M is sponsoring a team in the CAN's co-ed sports league and we're looking for players.

Last year the Tribe's first flag football team in the CAN league competed against sixteen other teams during the regular season and in post-season play. This season promises to be better: More wins, more camaraderie, and more fun!

Teams are comprised of five men and and three women, and fields are divided into four twenty-yard zones. Read the official rules document for all of the details of play in the CAN league.

Participation fees are minimal (discounted slightly, on a graduated scale, for Chapter members and alumni). If you are an alumnus or alumna of the College and have not yet joined the Chapter for the 2000-2001 Membership Year, you can do so now, from this site. Non-alumni friends are welcome, subject to availability of space.

Like last season's WMDC Flag Football list, the WMDC.FF2000 list will serve as the primary means of getting the news out about rules, practices, games, and other related gatherings. So sign up now and be sure you get timely information about the team!

The CAN league is only in its 3d season. The league doesn't specify how teams should organize themselves, as long as they have a captain on the field during each game, as long as they referee their share of games, abide by the rules of play, pay their fees, and have a point of contact for the team.

The follow table illustrates the structure for this year's W & M team. But William and Mary has a 300-year tradition of liberal self-government, so all interested parties are invited to comment and offer input.

    Manager

In charge of scheduling games and practices, general organizing, volunteer assignments, interaction with CAN, announcements, making sure coaches and captains follow rules of fairness and comply with CAN mandates. Other duties include appointing captains or making sure they get elected, and working with the coaches to designate Player of the Week nominees to the CAN commissioner.

    Coaches

In charge of developing offensive plays, defensive formations and plays, running drills and practices, making and practicing special teams plays, designating the first team, making offensive and defensive position assignments.

    Captains

Offensive and defensive captains are designated before each game, and they alone, under CAN rules, have the right to talk to referees, argue penalties, accept or decline penalties. Unless the manager or the coach is also the captain for the squad on the field they technically have no say in these matters. On defense the captain is in charge of calling plays. On offense, the quarterback usually calls plays, and is usually also the offensive captain.

    Players

Act as a team, follow good sportsmanship, volunteer to help when it is needed (for picking up equipment or dropping it off, or for helping referee other league games), attend as many games and practices as possible, and keep Manager informed when unable to attend.
